When I was about eight or nine, my best friend and I made our own club: The Unicorn Club. We had rules, designated meeting dates, and membership requirements. Our club was amazing (how could it not with such an awesome name?)but only thrived for about three weeks. Meh. You win some you lose some. In middle school, I joined a soccer team called-you guessed it: The Unicorns. We were a great team and had a passionate coach. The issue was that I really didn’t enjoy sports but my parents thought it would help me “build character.” I saw it through and who knew a soccer team would introduce me to George Michael and Pontiac Fierro’s? Win/WinIn high school when black clothing, copious amounts of black eyeliner and combat boots comprised my entire wardrobe, I joined Amnesty International and what was then The Southwest AIDS Committee in El Paso. I became hyper aware of my altruism and began on a personal journey to make my community better than I found it.I never looked back. Fast forward to 2021 when I had the unique experience of attending The Aspen Institute. There I met leaders- modern day unicorns from around the country who work to elevate peoples lives, defend our countryselflessly, and who are the true movers and shakers of the world. I am proud to still have semi-regular contact with them throughout the year because they are constant reminders there is hope for the future. I continue to learn and grow and work to be a better person not at center stage, but quietly from the back of the room. My career has been a journey and I am grateful for family, friends and colleagues who have helped me along the way.I am now involved in local boards as opposed to clubs, I still love George Michael- may he rest in peace- and I was never lucky enough to drive a Fierro. Black is still a staple in my wardrobe for other reasons and I have learned unicorns are always all around us, hidden in plain sight. 🦄
