Deputy DirectorDc Department Of Corrections Jul 2017 - Sep 2022Washington, District Of Columbia, UsI have had oversight of all educational opportunities for incarcerated residents and training/professional development for DC DOC staff during my DC DOC tenure. During this time, I and my team implemented 1:1 technology, degree-bearing postsecondary programs, CTE training, and a myriad of innovative in-person, synchronous, and asynchronous learning opportunities for incarcerated students. I created and launched program housing units (LEAD Up!), which provided a safe, therapeutic living environment for DOC residents while pursuing academic, vocational, and re-entry goals. The subject of research interest by universities and the Library of Congress, LEAD Up! utilizes Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) as a behavioral management framework, focusing on teaching and incentivizing pro-social behaviors instead of relying on punitive measures. I also created and launched a post-release employment program for DC residents returning to the community which included partnering with local businesses willing to hire returning citizens, paying the participants' salary for the first 6 months to assist the employer, and in turn, reserving one day per week to provide soft skill and cognitive behavior training for participants. I also launched a staff training program called Learning Unlocked which focused on community policing, cultural diversity, implicit bias, and building trust between the community and peace officers. Participants of this course are rookie officers as well as incarcerated students. My team not only trained DC DOC cadets, but also cadet officers with the Metropolitan Police Department. -
Director Of ProgramsLone Star Justice Alliance Jul 2020 - Jul 2021Austin, Texas, UsLSJA piloted Transformative Justice, a diversionary program for emerging adults, in two Texas counties, and I served as the Director of Programs on a contract basis to build the foundation of Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS), participant activities, and a multi-disciplinary team structure through which staff could provide engaging services to participants. In this role, I created and wrote staff and participant manuals, work flow charts, forms, and curricula. -
Chief Education AdministratorFederal Bureau Of Prisons Jan 2017 - Jul 2017Washington, District Of Columbia, UsAppointed by Obama-era US Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates to build the first-ever school district for the Federal Bureau of Prisons, I was honored and excited by the prospect of creating an educational system for incarcerated students around the country. A change in administration cut my time at the FBOP short, but my team was able to complete the task of ensuring GED testing moved into the 21st century. My time at the FBOP also provided the opportunity to network and meet thought-leaders across the country as we begin to move from re-thinking how we provide opportunities to the 2.3 million people incarcerated in our country to re-forming how we do it. I served as a Program Advisor on the White House Leadership Development team, representative of the Federal Interagency Reentry Council and Roundtable, advisor for the Federal Government Action Learning Community of Practice, mentor for the Department of Justice International Women's Seminar, and was a frequent guest speaker/instructor for the Leadership and Executive Development Program (LEAP). -
Director Of Instruction (Asst Superintendent)Windham School District Aug 2015 - Jan 2017Huntsville, Texas, UsWSD provides academic, career and technical education, and cognitive intervention programming for offenders in the custody of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. As the Assistant Superintendent over instruction, I supervised regional and central office staff and principals of 92 campuses in Texas Department of Criminal Justice prisons and jails, with approximately 63,000 students enrolled annually. I and my team implemented CTE programming in 10 jails where this programming did not exist. State-wide, we increased student industry certifications from 5,000 to 26,000 and partnered with a team of expert statisticians from Texas Tech University to design data dashboard for efficient collection of academic, career, and technical data on post incarceration employment to inform programming and staff training decisions. I designed a re-organization of human capital resources to streamline resources and better serve staff and students. Our WSD team during this time period were innovative and progressive in implementing instructional and organizational systems that improved learning and over-all agency effectiveness. -
