Dr. Anat Shalev is a senior lecturer at the Ashkelon Academic College, Faculty of Social Work, and a teaching fellow at the Hebrew University and Ben Gurion University. In addition to her academic roles, Dr. Shalev is a Couples and Family Therapy Psychotherapist and a Supervisor. For the past three decades, Dr. Shalev has dedicated her career to researching and studying trauma, personal growth, and mental illness. She developed recovery-oriented models for individuals facing mental health challenges and their families.Dr. Shalev established and implemented a multi-faceted recovery-oriented program at the Beer-Sheva Mental Health Center. This program uses evidence-based methods to advance patient treatment, adapt currently available interventions to patient needs, educate staff, implement intervention strategies, and encourage research and collaborative efforts with other professional organizations (Ministry of Health, National Insurance Institute of Israel, The Joint, etc.). Dr. Shalev established Meital: The Center for Support and Counseling for Families Dealing with Family Members with Mental Illness. This program was established in 1999 and focuses on the families' needs, also teaching them the skills necessary to deal with a mentally ill family member.This program has been adopted on a national level.In her book “From Invisibility to Partnership, Pathways of Coping and Recovery from Psychiatric Illness Within the Family” Dr. Shalev and Neomi Hadas Lidor, present a multi-faceted view of family recovery in the face of psychiatric illness, featuring perspectives from individuals with lived experience, family members, professionals, academics, and activists. It highlights the challenges and strengths of these families and emphasizes the importance of combining theoretical knowledge with personal insights. Rather than offering a fixed solution, the book encourages shared learning and ongoing dialogue among all involved.
