  • University Of Pretoria
    Guest Lecturer
University Of Pretoria Jan 2014 - Present
    Hatfield, Pretoria
I serve as a guest lecturer to the Department of Psychology teaching courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The course that I present to first year psychology students is a lecture series entitled "A Brief Tour of the Human Condition" in which we explore the historical origins of psychology and trace the trajectory of this scientific discipline to its modern form. We also interrogate the medical model of health and the unique interplay of physiology and socio-historical factors which contribute to stress and health promoting behaviours. We end the tour with a brief examination of the nature of abnormal psychology by addressing issues concerning the nature of normality, the clinical definition of insanity and the various ways in which psychiatric disorders may impair functioning and create subjective distress.I also present a module to the psychology honours students on advanced cognitive psychology which explores the neurobiological underpinnings and conceptual models of cognitive processes which make us uniquely human. In this course we examine seminal theoretical contributions to cognitive theory which led to the fall of behaviourism and ushered in the cognitive revolution of psychology in the 1950's. Through intense examination of case histories and emerging research we are able to map important components of the human mind in order to understand the sensation and perception as the art of seeing and believing and reasoning and decision making in the science of freedom. The topics which I present for psychology masters students range from psychodiagnostics and clinical formulation to psychological assessment methodology. I cover the basics of clinical practice such as the clinical interview, suicide risk assessment, case formulation, the process of differential diagnosis according to the DSM 5. I also present on diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to different forms of child psychopathology and the intricacies of psychodynamic therapy.
