In our increasingly shrinking yet expanding global marketplace, the application of 21st-century skills—not social networks, not pedigrees, not socioeconomic stratification—will be the hallmark of the successful.First and foremost, I consider myself a teacher—whether that is for adults, fellow teachers, or children. The role of teacher is that of a steward, and the role assumes the enormous and bifurcated responsibility of exposing others to new experiences and understandings and establishing a learning climate that enables students to experience competence, relatedness and autonomy—three conditions that are essential to every student’s ability to become intrinsically motivated to learn. To learn for the sake of learning, not to earn a grade or a degree for career potential, is the ultimate goal of an educator.
