Profile bio

About Dr. David E.

'Innovation' is a word that gets used a lot in the tertiary digital design sector, with 'innovation' seen as the holy grail of learning design, instructional design, and eLearning. It is a word that is often ascribed to the very act of putting learning content on an LMS, as though the hosting of digital assets continues to represent disruptive change in the digital education sector, as it did in the late 1990's. But, in 2018, what does it mean to 'innovate' in a digital learning design space? My career has been a quest for innovation. What can be new, transformative, and user-centered in the pursuit of new ways of educating? And, in the context of commercial technology, social technology, and the kinds of applications, devices, and internet-driven platforms that our students are increasingly immersed in, what does, and should, 'innovation' look like?'Innovation' is the use of technology in order to provide new digital solutions to current pedagogical puzzles. Whether through simulation, gamification, narrative scenarios, or multimedia design, innovation begins with the question: 'How can we do this better, and what new tools can we draw on to make that happen?'I am passionate about education, technology, and innovative, transformative thinking around digital pedagogies. My career focus is on blending progressive infrastructure design, creative thinking informed by the new media era, high level digital design and development skills, and a love of techno-pedagogies designed to explore, extend, and enhance formal learning spaces.Contact me for my full resume and digital design portfolio.

Educational Designer

Caulfield East, Victoria, Australia

As of April 2023, I have moved to the Monash Business School as an educational designer.

Online Learning Manager

Faculty Of Audiology And Speech Pathology

As of January 2019, I was the online learning manager at the school of audiology and speech pathology at the University of Melbourne. The HEARnet Learning project began as an attempt to provide a flexible, effective solution for audiologists and speech pathologists to continue developing their skills, knowledge, and understandings regarding developing aspects of their practice once they are employed in clinical settings. As this work has increased in complexity, HEARnet now develops clinical simulations, multimedia scenario-based learning objects, custom built visual, audio, and animated assets, and game-based multimodal training packages, with a view to ensuring that we position ourselves at the forefront of design thinking around digital pedagogies. With HEARnet Learning's acquisition by the University of Melbourne, my role focuses increasingly on the development of platform agnostic learning and development pieces that can seamlessly be deployed in both commercial eLearning environments such as HEARnet Learning, and tertiary learning management systems such as Canvas that are used by the university to run all online and blended courses. In 2020, my intention is to bring HEARnet Learning to a new level of sophistication by focusing on some of the key pedagogical questions that the project has raised thus far. What can clinical training packages in the medical and medical-adjacent disciplines achieve through media-rich pedagogies in terms of practical simulations, and what is the appropriate level of abstraction necessary to balance verisimilitude with an outcomes-focused approach? Once we decouple formal training from the monologic, sequential, linear approach which replicates the structures of physical media, what affordances do we discover in terms of design AND pedagogy? My role continues to pursue interesting ideas in our field, and my focus remains on disruptive digital approaches and design thinking solutions to complex pedagogical questions.

I am the Online Learning Manager for the HEARing CRC (http://hearingcrc.org), a not-for-profit cooperative research center partnered with the University of Melbourne School of Audiology.I am involved in the end-to-end design, development, and deployment of a range of eLearning initiatives both within the faculty, within the context of CRC partnerships, and for commercial application in CPD-point based accredited professional training. As a designer, a developer, and an educational technologist with a research-based digital education background, I am passionate about bringing a high-quality commercial production aesthetic to tertiary and corporate learning/instructional design. I work with a wide range of technologies, including Articulate Storyline/Rise, Adobe Captivate, Moodle, Canvas, Learnbook, Moodlerooms, Adobe Creative Suite, Vizio, GoAnimate, and Camtasia. My role allows me to pursue and expand my own capacities in the areas of learning design, media production, and project management, and it is a privilege to work with successful and passionate academic staff, executive staff, and external partners every day.My interests resulting from this role have expanded to include medical training simulators, authored using a mixed-technology methodology. In translating process, procedure, and scenario into deployable digital objects, learner engagement is amplified, the efficacy of our training is amplified, and the professionalism of our offerings are amplified. My intention is to continue to pursue this subset of the broader learning design field, and to explore the possibilities of simulation technologies across disciplines and learner contexts.

Digital Learning Specialst

Melbourne, Australia

In the newly created role of Digital Learning Specialist at Online Education Services (OES), I was responsible for the end-to-end development and production of interactive, multimedia-based learning content for the learning design team. My role involved the management of multiple stakeholders, including learning designers, external subject matter experts, internal management and administration, and third-party content providers, and the expectation was that I was able to bring a new level of technological sophistication to the core OES offering of Canvas-based course design. I worked across multiple university partners, including Swinburne University and Western Sydney online, and I achieved my goal of ensuring that the team were given a new set of digital learning design tools which they would be able to use to ensure that their learning design bore the fruits of technological currency, and was anchored in an approach which constantly strove to pursue new, innovative digital approaches in teaching and learning.
