Professor Jarvis is an agenda setting research leader with a 20-year post-PhD career in commercial and higher education research contexts. He has played formative roles in the conception, establishment and leadership of two socio-economic research centres at Coventry University; the Applied Research Centre in Sustainable Regeneration (SURGE) in 2006, and the Centre for Business in Society (CBiS) in 2014, where currently he holds the post of Co-Director. David’s ongoing Co-director role in CBiS has been vital in building, shaping, managing and mentoring a Research Excellence Framework (REF) ready team of 30 full-time academic researchers, over 20 associated Faculty staff, 15 Professors and Readers, a professional services support team, nine Visiting Professors and almost 150 doctoral candidates.David’s priority is impactful research that makes meaningful connections between academe, policy and practice. His focus on various dimensions of socio-economic change is wrought of personal experience of deindustrialisation and includes a particular interest in manufacturing – its renaissance, transformation and low-carbon transition – and transport, especially the ways in which mobility and access shapes places, economies and communities. His personal reputation has been gained through a cross-sector and inter-disciplinary portfolio of more than 70 policy research, consultancy and evaluation projects for public, private and third sector collaborators and clients. These have included multi-national corporate clients, the European Union, UK central government, local and regional government, NDPBs and voluntary and community sector organisations.Alongside his profile as a research leader, David uses insight and experience gained through research to enrich teaching innovation and curriculum development. This includes a supervision track record of significant scale, involving supervision of 19 Doctoral candidates to date. Most significantly, in 2017, as part of the expansion of Coventry Business School, David devised, implemented and led a new professional doctorate – the Coventry DBA – bringing about a step-change in the University’s executive education offer. With a home in the Faculty of Business and Law, the cohort-based Coventry DBA is a unique offer in a UK context, providing a research-focused rather than taught professional doctorate to practicing senior managers.
