The 13th Avenue Community Center was established in 1937 by local civil rights activist Minnie Rogers, legendary educator Dr. Mary McCloud Bethune and former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. The center became a cornerstone for recreational, cultural, social and educational activities serving youth in the low-income neighborhoods of central Bradenton. The founders’ vision was to provide a place that offered a solid educational base so at-risk youth could realize their full potential.Since it was founded, the organization has touched the lives of thousands of children by helping participants fulfill their destinies and become successful men and women who routinely give back to their community.Today, the organization is known as United Community Centers, Inc. The agency was relocated into a brand new, state-of-the art facility on 24th Street E in Bradenton in 2010 and continues to offer academic enrichment programs, literacy training, mentoring and character building opportunities.

An Uprising in the Village (AUV) is an interactive program with a cultural - based curriculum to engage, empower, and instill community. The curriculum is founded on adults/parents, children, families, and neighbors growing positively together. In AUV, youth are part of the solution, they have power to make decisions focusing on making their community more engaged and empowered. Youth and adults work together to accomplish the program goals. Interactively, those of the community unite to provide the following plethora of resourceful tools to build the community as a whole:-Leadership -Community Awareness -Community Enhancement -Intergenerational Collaboration -Strategic Change -Reflective Movement

Responsible for Program Outcome Measures training and documentation, prepare/copy/distribute program information to clients and community referral sources.

Solita's House is a HUD certified, 501c3, Housing Counseling Agency founded in June 2006. Initially, the founders wanted to ensure that all people interested in becoming homeowner's receive the essential education, counseling and knowledge they needed to secure and maintain home ownership. Solita's House is also focused on immersing people in the "basics" of being economically educated so that they can achieve financial wealth in all areas of their lives.

In 2005, as a result of being wounded while in combat (Operation Iraqi Freedom), Derrick was awarded a Purple Heart. In appreciation and consolation for his commitment and honorable service, in 2008, Derrick was honorably retired from the U.S. Army.
