Leicester & London, United Kingdom
Developing research projects and doctoral studentships with collaborative partners in Higher Education and the wider archaeology sector for the only archaeology unit that is a UKRI Independent Research Organisation.
Leicester, United Kingdom
I developed collaborative research, consultancy, CPD (Continuing Professional Development) and contract research projects between organisations in the heritage sector and academic staff in the Schools of Archaeology & Ancient History, History, History of Art & Film, and Museum Studies at the University of Leicester. These knowledge exchange activities ensure that teaching and research into heritage and the historic environment continues to inform, and be informed by, professional practice.
I undertook a PhD, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, and assisted with teaching on Leicester University’s MA in Historical Archaeology, where I taught theory and methods in standing buildings archaeology. My doctoral research examined evolving notions of modernity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as manifested in the built environment of the time. I considered this through an examination of social housing built between 1870 and 1930, in London, Birmingham and Liverpool, how contemporary housing policy was manifested in the buildings, amenities and streets of such housing, and how those early policies and attitudes continue to shape contemporary life on housing estates today.
London, United Kingdom
I undertook pre-planning built heritage assessment work, and led built heritage recording on large infrastructure projects and other building recording work across the United Kingdom.I supervised recording projects associated with the development of large infrastructure, namely the 2012 Olympic Park in Stratford, east London, and progressed the built heritage recording which accompanied the extension of the East London Line of the London Underground from assessment stage, to recording, documentary research, interpretation, and publication. As a senior member of the department, I held responsibility for passing on skills in project design, building recording and assessment methods, documentary research and report writing to other members of the team, and worked with colleagues in other departments within the organisation to deliver completed projects to clients on time, within budget, and met standards for archaeological recording and reporting. In addition to supervising and undertaking built heritage recording work, I also have considerable experience of providing built heritage advice for a variety of infrastructure, amenity and property projects, through working with members of MOLA’s Heritage Consultancy Team. Work included the production of historic environment sections of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), built heritage assessments, and contribution to area masterplans and Conservation Management Plans.
Coalbrookdale, Shropshire, United Kingdom
I undertook excavation, landscape survey and standing building recording projects on commercial and community projects in the West Midlands. Excavated sites include a medieval and post-medieval mill complex, a medieval ceramics production site and a post-medieval forge in Wednesbury, the subject of a paper at the Contemporary and Historical Archaeology in Theory conference at Bristol University in 2006. I also supervised volunteers and students on a public archaeology project examining the site of the Upper Forge in Coalbrookdale, in the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site, surveying and excavating the earliest steel furnace in Britain
United Kingdom, Ireland, Bermuda
Archaeological Assistant on survey and excavation projects for research projects and commercial archaeology units, developing a range of field skills on multi-period sites in the UK, Ireland, and for the Bermuda National Trust.
