 Working in close collaboration with African Civil Society, for the purpose of synergy, to manage the ‘Rights Africa’ human rights and advocacy programme within Africa, ensuring that (sub) regional objectives are met and that programme, human resources and system standards are maintained; developing and promoting a rights-based approach framework for each thematic programme of work within ‘Rights Africa’ and to assess ‘Rights Africa’ effectiveness in achieving its goals. To provide political and policy advice on the (sub) region to the Africa’s regional and sub-regional organizations, and to observe and interpret trends in the external environment related to human rights and their violations; to plan and lead operational planning and implement influencing strategies on human rights issues and identify where they might be a component of wider influencing strategies; managing the implementation of (financial) resources, for projects, received from the African Union Commission and the European Union (EU).  To develop long term strategies and action plans to develop and carry out campaigns on: (i) access to justice, (ii) duties, ethics and obligations of law enforcement agencies, (iii) duties and rights of citizens.  To contribute to better democratic and economic governance in Africa through improving access to justice and legal education. The specific objectives of my consultancy are to improve (i) access to legal services / remedial justice, especially for vulnerable groups, (ii) legal education, training and research skills, (iii) information and management of cases. Develop and organise (a) sensitisation workshops for customary law stakeholders; (b) continuous training for judges and court staff and (d) developing country jurisprudence and research. To provide Africa’s regional and sub-regional organizations specific advice on human rights, especially issues related to advocacy and media matters.

As Senior Legal Officer, my task at the Commission was to provide it with a pro-active integrated approach of promoting and protecting human rights in Africa. I have in-depth theoretical knowledge of the law, including a mastery of the African Human Rights System. I have a thorough knowledge of international legal procedures and instruments including a thorough understanding of international law principles. I took the lead, for many years, in conducting and supervising legal research in the areas of law that fall within the competence of the Commission. Part of my brief at the Commission was also to conduct extensive legal research, provide detailed analysis of assigned matters and, as required, prepare background materials and summaries of issues. For many years, I took the lead in conducting and supervising legal analysis of draft judgements. I took the lead in drafting many of the leading judgements and legal opinions of the Commission, including drafting legal recommendations, both for the attention of the Commission and the Court. I also apply discretion and sound judgement in applying legal expertise to sensitive, complex legal issues. To provide the Commission a pro-active integrated approach of promoting and protecting human rights in Africa, including organising press conferences for the Commission, setting up interviews, ensuring access by the media to the Commission’s external documents and to report on work of the Commission
