This thesis deals with the applicability of accelerometer based sensing technologies in the estimation of energy expenditure and assessment of physical activity in several unique environments. This thesis assesses the applicability of commercially available accelerometer based sensor platforms in the assessment of physiological and environmental impact on subjects in cycling, horse-racing and helicopter search and rescue operations. These technologies have the ability to give objective measures of physical activity, motor skills and sleep indices as well as possibly being used to assess the impact of external psychological stressors such as sleep deprivation, environmental changes and task proficiency.
