Dr. Huma Batool Email and Phone Number
With a specialized focus on Cognitive Linguistics and Language/Communication Disorders, I hold a PhD from the National University of Modern Languages (NUML), Islamabad. My doctoral journey included an enriching experience as an IRSIP HEC scholar under the mentorship of Professor Thora Tenbrink at Bangor University in the UK, where I expanded my research horizons and honed my academic skills.Since joining Air University in 2019 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of English, I have been dedicated to designing and teaching a diverse array of courses, that intersect language, brain, and cognition, at MPhil & PhD levels, While exploring Language & Brain, I have made significant contributions to the understanding of language production and comprehension across various populations, including neurotypicals, slow learners, and individuals with hearing and vision impairments, as well as those affected by neurodevelopmental conditions such as aphasia, Down’s syndrome, epilepsy, autism. Research explorations like these not only helped me enhance the academic growth of my students, whom I supervise in their MPhil and PhD research projects.A significant milestone in this research journey has been the establishment of the first-ever Neurolinguistics Research Group in Pakistan, which I am proud to have founded and directed. This pioneering initiative represents a groundbreaking effort of my RESEARCH TEAM, under my supervised guidance, to explore the uncharted boundaries of language and the brain -- a field that has been largely overlooked in Pakistan. My expertise also extends into the realms of Language and Cognition, where I have supervised 10 MPhil theses and am currently guiding FOUR PhD candidates. My research interests in Cognitive Semantics, Cognitive Poetics, Language, Space & Cognition, and Cognitive Discourse Analysis have allowed me to explore the intricate connections between language and cognitive processes, contributing to a deeper understanding of how we communicate and interpret the world around us.Beyond my teaching and research, I have actively engaged with the academic community through a substantial record of presentations at national and international conferences. I have contributed to peer-reviewed journals and have taken on leadership roles, serving as the Chair for Academic Sessions at five international conferences. Additionally, I have facilitated numerous workshops and seminars and delivered insightful talks on ongoing research topics, further enriching the dialogue within the field of language, brain & cognition.

I am frequently invited to share my expertise as a guest speaker at universities and as a keynote speaker at international conferences. Through these engagements, I am committed to advancing the under-researched field of psycho-neurolinguistics in Pakistan and promoting collaborative opportunities within the research community. In the past three years, I have organized impactful events such as TechHighEd II Pakistan (2023) as Focal Person, focusing on the digitization of teaching and learning English, and TechHighEd I Pakistan (2021), where I lead the Abstract Review Committee and VIP Guests Committee. Lecturer (English Language/Communication Skills/Technical Writing)National University Of Computer And Emerging Sciences Jan 2008 - Jul 2019PakistanDuring my tenure, I had the opportunity to design and teach a variety of courses aimed at enhancing communication skills for engineering and computer science students. My course offerings included Communication Skills, Writing Composition, Technical Report Writing, and English Language, all tailored to meet the specific needs of BS (EE) and BS (CS) students. In addition to my teaching responsibilities, I assumed the role of In charge CALL [Computer Assisted Language Lab] from 2009-2011, where I taught both credited and non-credited courses in Computer-Assisted Language Learning. This role allowed me to equip students with essential skills to thrive in a technology-driven environment. From August 2016 to July 2019, I implemented significant changes to the curriculum for Technical Report Writing and Communication Skills. I revamped course outlines based on a thorough assessment of student needs and industry demands. This included introducing informal discussion sessions on interview techniques and CV writing, as well as making mock interviews a compulsory part of the Communication Skills course. To enhance students' presentation abilities, I organized opportunities for them to present in an auditorium setting, effectively helping them overcome stage fright.I also transformed the assessment methods for Communication Skills, shifting from traditional written exams to evaluations focused on speaking and listening. Additionally, I modernized the Technical Report Writing course by incorporating computer-based tasks, including class assignments, quizzes, and exams, which better prepared students for real-world applications.Beyond my teaching duties, I was an active member of the Academic Council at NUCES-FAST from August 2014 to July 2017, and also mentored the FAST Literary Society and the FAST Debating Society, assisting in the execution of their activities and organizing events such as the "Carnival of Creative Arts" and various declamation and debating competitions. -
