• Responsible for medium-duty diesel combustion research to develop understanding necessary to reduce fuel consumption and pollutant emissions. Led development, fabrication, and commissioning of new diesel research engine.• Conceived research projects and key scientific hypotheses, devised experiments, collaborated to develop novel experimental hardware, executed complex experiments, performed innovative data analyses, published and presented technical results. Directed multiple postdoctoral researchers’ efforts to do the same.• Developed scientific understanding of flow, mixture formation, and combustion within a state-of-the-art diesel combustion chamber. Hypothesized a new piston geometry to improve efficiency and emissions. Initial experiments demonstrate that this design improves efficiency but its effects on pollutant formation will require further research.• Designed a new quantum cascade laser system and directed its construction to enable time-resolved measurement of formaldehyde emissions in the exhaust during cold-start operation.

• Performed light-duty diesel combustion research to understand the effects of injection strategy calibration on fuel injector behavior and combustion noise• Implemented high-speed photography of fuel sprays and combustion, laser-induced fluorescence imaging, and infrared imaging to provide insight into complex phenomena and their impact on diesel combustion. Supported computational simulation (CFD) efforts with calibration data to evaluate simulation and modeling approaches.
