Dr. Jacquelyn Ollison is an equity-focused expert in improving teacher retention in high-poverty schools by addressing teachers' compassion fatigue. She has a doctorate in education studying this topic, with over 24 years of experience in learning, teaching, and leading in high-poverty schools at the site, district, county, and state levels. She is a featured TEDx speaker on Educators' compassion fatigue and she knows the impact compassion fatigue has on Educators because it happened to her, and she left the classroom. She believes all educators should be revered and supported as first-responders and has said as much in her TEDx talk.She spends her days focusing on retaining and supporting educators of color and training new teachers to be equity-minded, effective, and compassionate so that they will remain in the profession as co-director for the California Teacher Residency Lab and as an instructor in UC Merced’s Teacher Credentialing program.She also volunteers for and serves as Board Secretary for Safe Black Space. Safe Black Space is an organization committed to ensuring Black communities are equipped with the tools needed to heal from the trauma of racism and thrive.
