The Washington office was established in 1942 in response to the pressures of shortages brought on by World War II. At that time, the Washington office served as an information center to assist members in contacting the proper federal agencies. Currently, it is the principal advocacy arm of the association. The Office of the President and AHA policy, communication, and national advocacy staff are located in the AHA Washington office.

My vision for the Midwest Alliance for Patient Safety is aligned with the board's strategicpriorities to expand the organization nationally and strengthen its position as a PSO leader andadvocate for patient safety by leveraging data effectively for actionable insights. I look forward to leading MAPS through a number of milestone moments, including a focus oneducating members on the value of adverse event submission, the introduction of a membershippatient safety excellence program and a physician engagement initiative. PSOs are designed to help clinicians, hospitals and health care organizations improve patientcare delivery by encouraging them to share best practices and lessons learned. PSOs utilizeaggregate data from multiple health care providers to identify patient safety issues quickly andallow improved early warning and communication about ways to reduce risk and improve safety.In addition, MAPS promotes a culture of safety in a protected environment by providing: Full privileges & confidentiality for patient safety work product; Secure adverse event data-collection solutions; Peer networking/learning; and Educational tools to improve patient safety.As part of its expanding PSO program, MAPS has teamed up with ECRI Institute to deliver PSOadverse event data collection solutions, robust educational opportunities and privilegeprotections provided by law.
