She worked as a lecturer for International Relations, nature conservation and socioeconomics at the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (Germany) and is part of the research group “Climate Change and Security” at the University of Hamburg since 2017. She has carried out several research stays in Ecuador, Canada, Switzerland and France and is active in the Network of Scientist For Future. Her research is based on a critical-normative approach and aims to develop the conceptualizations of security, conflict, human well-being and justice via the new readings of human-nature relations. The forms and roles of agency, expertise, power and normative foundations within global governance are further constitutive elements of her research. The emerging Anthropocene Studies and the question of the changing critical theories in this context are also part of her research.

Project "Climate change in security perceptions, conceptions and practice at the United Nations Security Council"Since 2007, the effects and perceived threats of climate change has been the subject of controversial discussion in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Does climate change influence the perception, conception and practice of national and international security? Judith Nora Hardt and Alina Viehoff explore this question by examining 15 country case studies at the UNSC. The research approach is based on a broad understanding of security policy and constructive approaches to security of Peace, Conflict and Security Studies. A special feature of the project, which is carried out in cooperation between the IFSH and the Climate Change and Security Research Group (CLISEC), is the inclusion of local expertise and a wide scientific network. The project is supported by the Federal Foreign Office of Germany.Hardt, Judith Nora & Viehoff, Alina (2020) "Der UN-Sicherheitsrat im (Klima-)Wandel?", DGVN UN-Debattenblog, https://dgvn.de/meldung/der-un-sicherheitsrat-im-klima-wandel/
