This PhD covered different types of thinking and in particular creative thinking. It looked at how useful the notion of left brain right brain is in learning and development and considered whether writing with the non-preferred hand could allow participants to access aspects of thinking they would normally note as their strength. The result was that it is helpful to talk about different types of thinking but not left brain/right brain as people do not have separated brains but one whole brain… Show more This PhD covered different types of thinking and in particular creative thinking. It looked at how useful the notion of left brain right brain is in learning and development and considered whether writing with the non-preferred hand could allow participants to access aspects of thinking they would normally note as their strength. The result was that it is helpful to talk about different types of thinking but not left brain/right brain as people do not have separated brains but one whole brain and therefore it is not in fact possible to separate out any higher level thinking skills. The only thinking skills that can be attributed to one side or the other are verbal repetition (left side) and recall of new faces (right side). Of course, motor skills are very strongly divided but this is completely different. The study warns against using the types of questionnaires that are banded about which put people into boxes as to what they can or cannot have as a thinking strength. The way forward is to understand the many different types (about 25 of them) and how understanding them can help communication, teamwork, problem solving and decision making. Show less
