I am a RN, a science & education graduate & hold a PhD in healthcare mathematics education. As a RN scientist I have >40 years of clinical practice, health science & mathematics education & translational research (TR) experience. As Professor of Healthcare Numeracy & Education (R.2018) & Professor Emeritus at USW & as a SIGMA (Phi Gamma) member, I remain internationally R&D active & committed to advancing global patient safety & professional values via innovative education practice. I direct & lead the safeMedicate international authentic drug dosage calculation & mathematics education environment design, development & TR program. I founded the safeMedicate program of R&D in 1990 & was later joined by an international team to advance safeMedicate as the global leader in authentic drug dosage calculation education. In 2020, I co-led the safeMedicate COVID-19 education response programme in support of HEIW, NHS & international medical education provision. safeMedicate programs employ unique virtual environments to support drug calculation competence development & transfer across the fuzzy thresholds between healthcare practice & the abstract world of classroom mathematics. In 2017, I & my team of healthcare mathematics education specialists co-founded Numeric Generics Ltd, to translate IP (KW, AW, 1990-2017), to enable the TR, classification & authentic learning & assessment of the core mathematics & healthcare numeracy skills that underpin & inform nursing science & professional healthcare practice.The web-based safeMedicate programs are distributed globally via Authentic World Ltd & strategic partners in the USA & Australasia. safeMedicate informs the curricula of 90% of nursing schools & wider healthcare education programs in the UK & has informed the competence development of >1/2 million nursing students & practitioners across 5 continents & 12 countries: UK, Ireland, USA, Canada, Australia, NZ, UAE, Qatar, Mauritius, Puerto Rico, Malta, Poland & Switzerland. To date >6.9 million safeMedicate competence assessments have been undertaken, contributing to a major advancement of global patient safety via innovative TR.My PhD & 34 year program of TR informed the RAE 2001, 2008 & REF 2014 & the 2010 & 2018 NMC ESC33 for Medicines Management & Future Nurse health numeracy policies. Based at the Cardiff MediCentre, Cardiff, Authentic World Ltd, under my co-directorship is a global leader in authentic patient-safety critical drug dosage calculation translational research. My 30+ year programme of translational research is currently informing education policy and the curricula of circa 90% of UK universities offering nursing and healthcare education programmes, and the competence development of nursing students and registered healthcare practitioners in 13 countries across five continents. Professor Of Innovation & Engagement In Healthcare Numeracy & EducationUniversity Of South Wales Apr 2004 - Dec 2018Advanced the curricula design, development and teaching of advanced clinical practitioner (ACP) level physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology and medication prescribing practice. Co-led the advanced clinical conditions pathophysiology programme for cell biology, medical microbiology, immunology, cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, neurological, endocrine, gastro-intestinal and musculoskeletal systems. Launched and led the Healthcare Education Research Group (HERG). Acted as Director of Studies and Supervisor to a wide range of PhD programmes, including: international disaster healthcare curriculum and competence design and practice; speech and language therapy led bedside dysphasia assessment of post-stroke patients; design and development of spirituality in nursing and healthcare curricula competencies; and quantitative data analysis programme design and evaluation. Examined PhD thesis and viva programmes including: nursing and healthcare mathematics education programme design and application; dental surgeon mathematics modelling for diagnosis and treatment of impacted wisdom teeth; mathematics & field modelling of military casualty estimation practice in Middle East military operations; and physiological signal assessment, evaluation and management in exercise practice. Acted as life sciences and education post graduate research coordinator for the LSE faculty, and scrutinised and supported PhD research programme design, development and supervision practices.
