Monthly outpatient psychopharmacology clinic

This was a residential retreat apartment building / community / center. The goal was for residents to work on his / her physical, psychic, mental, and spiritual healing and betterment. The R.A., resident associate (paid position), oversaw the residential retreaters, and facilitated meditation groups, and 12-step support meetings onsite. RA also performed basic property management duties.

Inpatient psychiatry at Atascadero State Hospital (ASH) in Central Coast of California. Worked as team leader in a multi-disciplinary setting. Psychiatric role was patient evaluation, treatment with psychotropic medications, monitoring medical condition with hospital medical officers; coordinating activities of psychologists in their behavioral treatments; social workers with placement and benefit activities; rehabilitation therapists in their socialization work, and interfaced with the backbone of day to day management - the psychiatric technician staff, PsychTechs. Personally, I treated primarily MDO, mentally disordered offenders, patients with schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder who had committed a crime and were on parole, and placed by the courts at ASH as a special condition of their parole for mental health treatment. Also, treated NGI, not guilty by reason of insanity patient population. (I did not routinely work with prisoners, nor with incompetent to stand trial patients, nor on an Admission unit). Consultation, committee work, and forensic assessments and reports along with some legal testimony were part of my activities there.

SDCPH - San Diego County Psychiatric Hospital. Inpatient team leader. Acting medical director during 1997, and again in 2004.Inpatient staff psychiatrist for severely mentally ill. Primarily patients with acute psychosis (mostly schizophrenia, bipolar manic with psychosis, and psycho-stimulant induced psychosis). Served the medically indigent, no insurance, or maxed out private insurance policy inpatient days for the year. About one third were homeless or on the verge of homelessness or just had lost their most recent housing, newly homeless.
