As a public health physician, my interest is applied population health research and teaching with a focus to evolve as a specialist in evidence based planningMy experience in clinical care and practice management has been complemented with four years experience of teaching undergraduate medical students in community medicine at the Aga Khan University in Karachi (1991-1995). My subsequent career as a specialist in health research, management and planning built on this work and the training I received in the Department of Community Health Sciences of the Age Khan University in Karachi (1991), at the ASEAN Institute of Health Development, Mahidol University in Thailand, sponsored by the Aga Khan Foundation (1993) and at the University of Ottawa (1999). Over the last two decades I have been working as a Research Fellow for CIET, the international academic NGO (www.ciet.org). In this role I design and led large scale social audits of health services, population based surveillance schemes and regional information systems with a focus on improving service delivery and governance. I have also been teaching on CIET Masters level courses in Pakistan and Nigeria. This work took me to several countries for extended assignments (Pakistan, Bangladesh, Namibia, Botswana, Malawi, Afghanistan and Nigeria). Across these international settings I mostly worked with government systems in promotion of evidence based population health. I played a leadership role in liaising with the policy level stakeholders, training teams of coordinators and supervisors for building capacities in health system research and fulfilled administration and financial management responsibilities of large projects. In the course of my work, I contributed consistently to responsible publication of results from my assignments in peer reviewed journals.
