OBJECTIVE: Personal StatementExperience as an Undergraduate and Graduate Educator, Mentor, Researcher and Administrator. I have chosen a career in academics and research, which provides me with the unique opportunity to interact closely with undergraduate and graduate students at Universidad Ana G. Méndez – Carolina Campus, Cupey Campus and Gurabo Campus. My overall professional goal is to become part of all aspects of the development of a continuously growing institution. In addition to my appointment as Associate Professor at UAGM-Carolina Campus, teaching Biology, Microbiology, Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Science courses, I was appointed as the General Biology Course Coordinator and as such I oversaw the organization and development of the Course. Additionally, from August until May 2019, I was the Principal Investigator of the NIH sponsored Program URGREAT-MBRS-RISE at the School of Science and Technology (SST); before that (2004-2017) I was the Executive Academic Director of the same Project. One of the contributions of the program (2013) we incorporated the Peer-Lead Team Learning (PLTL) model for General Biology, a learning strategy we used as part of our Program. This model introduced Peer-Led Workshops as an integral part of the course. Students who have done well in the General Biology course were recruited to become Peer-Leaders (PL). The PL meet with small groups of four to six students each week, for one hour, to discuss, debate, and engage in problem solving modules related to the course material. Due to the success of this model, at our Campus, the initiative was implemented on General Chemistry and the Mathematic Courses. Currently, as the Principal Investigator HSI-NSF Supporting the Academic Journey of STEM Students through Research, I have the chance to provide opportunities, research experiences and career internships to STEM students with the expected outcomes of clarifying, refining, and reinforcing students' persistence in STEM fields. In addition, and during the pandemic (2020-2022) I also held the position as Dean of the Science and Technology Academic Division on UAGM, here I had the opportunity to work with top professionals and faculty in important projects at the Division, furthering my competencies as an Academic, Researcher, Administrator and Leader.

It was created in 1991 as a collaborative venture of the main higher education institutions in Puerto Rico to increase the quantity and quality of minority college students who successfully complete a bachelor degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM), and continue on to complete a graduate degree in a STEM-related field. The alliance is composed of ten major institutions of higher education that are well known for their strong commitment to academic excellence and for providing a learning environment conducive to retaining and graduating a significant number of undergraduate students in STEM careers.PR-LSAMP has been the main generator of institutional change among all members of the alliance in creating a genuine culture of undergraduate research and mentoring, therefore improving undergraduate STEM education.

Principal Investigator Hsi-Nsf Supporting The Academic Journey Of Stem Students Through ResearchUniversidad Ana G. Méndez (Uagm) Jun 2020 - PresentCarolina, Puerto RicoSupporting the Academic Journey of STEM Students through Research and Work Experiences in Puerto Rico. This project's objectives include providing research experiences and career internships to STEM students with the expected outcomes of clarifying, refining, and reinforcing students' persistence in STEM fields. The specific goals of the project include implementing discovery-based research experiences in first- and second-year biology courses to spark students? curiosity and develop their scientific identities. After their third year, STEM majors will engage in professional development activities and have access to internships. The effectiveness of project activities will be evaluated through a mixed-methods research design, integrating quantitative and qualitative data to assess and understand the underlying factors affecting students' performance in STEM academic programs. The project ultimately aims to enhance the academic experience of low-income students, particularly Hispanic students, leading to an increase in retention rates in STEM programs. Dissemination of this project's objectives, activities, outcomes, and findings will occur through publications and symposia aimed the academic and scientific communities, industry stakeholders, and the community at large. The HSI Program aims to enhance undergraduate STEM education and build capacity at HSIs. Projects supported by the HSI Program will also generate new knowledge on how to achieve these aims. https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=1953640&HistoricalAwards=false -
