About Dr. Lea Gärtner

I love to wrest insights from data and make complex relations understandable.When I first started my undergraduate degree in political science and American studies, I had no idea that I would eventually be using advanced statistical methods and machine learning. My inquisitive mind was interested in real-world PROBLEMS, not methods. However, over the next several years, I realized that the right data and methods are key to discovering SOLUTIONS – and I dove right in.Now, I have 5+ years of practical expertise in collecting, pre-processing and analyzing both structured and unstructured data using methods like generalized linear and multi-level regression modeling, natural language processing and machine learning in Stata, R and Python. As a researcher and a teacher, visualizing and explaining results is important to foster knowledge growth. So with every new project, I keep learning different ways to make data speak to me and to others.In my spare time, I utilize my communication skills and mild obsession with organizing things to advise crime victims and raise public awareness for crime prevention.
