• On joining the company, work was required to provide vision and clarity over technology. I re-organized the team, and then helped them develop a clear business model and the technology required to recover value from waste as part of the circular economy.• Team members needed guidance. I worked with the team to understand their abilities and re-assigned roles to maximize their enjoyment of the work, which has helped us develop a high performing and focussed team.• The business model was unclear and the path to revenue not well defined. By defining our niche with the circular economy, we have been able to mobilize our technology with a clear path to revenue in the short-term. Companies are now seeking us as their solution. • Outreach and social media was non-existent. By contacting external experts, we were able to grow our online and in-person presence and are not being sought out by potential clients for our technology

Advancing the company to allow the development phase of the Loma Larga Mining Project, I spearheaded the work to obtain both the legal and social development permits.• Permitting strategy: Having previously used a large, and very expensive international company, we put together a consortium of local consultants to develop the environmental impact study, including University professors from a city close to the project to increase credibility• The company had a low public profile, which needed to change. I worked with the local and corporate communications teams to develop an new approach promoting a green mine producing metals required for the move to a low carbon economy.• On reviewing the feasibility study, and with a view to a green mine, I promoted battery electric vehicles for the underground mine. This study is ongoing.

Systems design and implementation during construction and operations. Obtain permits and community agreements (land and social) for project expansions and new projects• Led the CSR team: the ELG mine winning two national Mexican awards for corporate responsibility performance (2018).• Obtained seven new environmental approvals using a new impact assessment methodology for Mexico that shortened approval times by increasing transparency.• The Mexican environmental regulatory authority (SEMARNAT) was concerned about many projects being developed in one area, so I successfully led the first ever regional environmental approval in Mexico for a mining project resulting in on-time project development.• Communities in Mexico seek attention by blockading access. By understanding community motivations, my team applied behavioural economics to community development agreements to the benefit of the company / community, so reducing community blockades of the mine to zero.• Worked with the site teams to reduce the safety incidents to <50% of the Ontario mining industry (end 2018 LTIFR <1.0 per million hours worked).• To reduce the costs of electricity, I was the project lead on the solar power plant design and implementation for the ELG mine as part of the long-term energy strategic plan

Oversight of the entire operation from mining to processing and tailings management to procurement and HR. Completed the re-start of the operation following suspension. • Developed and implemented the strategy to remove the illegal union blockade – personal communication with local community members and internal actions resulted in unlimited access to the mine.• Following the project shutdown, I linked my team members using systems leadership models to ramp up production to nameplate on the gold recovery plant within 3 months of the re-start.• Land access for mining projects is a key challenge, I designed, and my team implemented, new model for land access agreements to provide long-term stability to the operations and the community members that reduced the project risk and shortened negotiation time by about 50%.

Guide the ESI to develop projects that would result in a change in the environmental management in mining in Canada• Developed Knowledge Hub Project for implementation in partnership with GeoScience BC• Two other projects developed to feasibility level - implementation pending funding.

Implementation of corporate programs for environment, social (community), and governance aligning site objectives with corporate requirements.• Communities want more input to community development, so we implemented new models that resulted in empowerment for stakeholder communities and controlled costs for the operation.• As a gold mining company in Africa, risk management is challenging, therefore, I worked with the World Gold Council to develop the Conflict-Free Gold Standard, which was then implemented at the GSR mines.• Addressed post-closure economic decline by integrating economic development into mine closure for tailings impoundments by creating conditions for the development of self-sustaining oil palm farms.• Led corporate safety initiatives that reduced the LTIFR from over 1.5 to <0.3/million hours.• To assist for the release of funds for GSR Corporate, we secured first ever environmental bond release in Ghana.

Define the systems to be used for control, compliance and permitting, and then assist the site teams to implement in a sustainable manner.• Bonding for rehabilitation is required. To provide a transparent method for determining the bonding level, I developed new asset retirement (ARO) model that is now used around the world.• To meet the governance and legal reporting requirements, I authored and implemented GSR Corporate Closure and Rehabilitation Standard that was approved by the GSR independent auditors.• To meet financing and environmental commitments, I managed full implementation and certification of ICMC at sites – Corporate Champion, ICMI Industry Advisory Group Co-Chair.• To increase overall transparency and corporate governance, I implemented the UN Global Compact reporting with full compliance for 6 years.

As the first VP Sustainability, I started the sustainability programs for compliance and governance.• The construction of the new BIOX plant was plagued by accidents. Through workforce empowerment and training, the LTIFR decreased from 1.44 to 0.2.• To provide access to new mineralised resources, we successfully resettled 8 communities by implementing IFC PS5.• Following a series of tailings incidents, we re-defined tailings management resulting in zero incidents in 6 years.• To improve public relations and increase transparency, I wrote and produced first ever GSR Annual Corporate Responsibility Report and all the subsequent reports until leaving the company.
