Active member in a number of Inter-Agency Debris Co-ordination meetings, where I formed part of a delegation representing the Japanese government. This committee is comprised of space-faring nations, with the aim of co-ordinating research internationally, and setting up operational and design guidelines in order to minimise the amount of debris produced by space operations.Participated in JAXA’s investigation into a catastrophic power failure that occurred on board the Advanced Earth Observing Satellite 2 (ADEOS-2) in October 2003, by conducting impacts tests on mock-ups of the satellite harness, and investigating the likelihood of an impact having been the cause (using space debris models, also estimating the satellite attitude disruption due to momentum imparted by a hypothetical impact).Conducted impact probability analysis and tests on mock-ups of the power harness and solar arrays of Engineering Test Satellite 8 (ETS-8) to determine the mission risk due to space debris and micrometeoroids; the satellite’s designers have considered my recommendations.Extensive experience of working in a clean room environment, examining a variety of satellite materials returned to Earth after exposure to space, specifically to search for hypervelocity impact damage, but also to assess contamination and other kinds of material degradation. Instruments used: laser microscope, optical CCD lens, scanning electron microscope.Collaboration with The Boeing Company, on payloads placed outside the International Space Station;
