On both national and international stages I provide pan-profession leadership on the use of ultrasound imaging in healthcare, with a particular emphasis on point of care ultrasound (PoCUS). A primary area of activity is working with different professions, clinical specialisms and healthcare systems to develop robust and sustainable solutions to their use of PoCUS. Central to this is application of the PoCUS framework approach that I developed, whereby the interrelated elements of (i) scope of practice, (ii) education & competency and (iii) governance are defined and aligned. Drawing upon my wide-ranging expertise in this area, each solution is bespoke to the particular requirements and context of the ‘end user’ profession, specialism or healthcare system. Some examples include:* Proposals (in the publication I lead authored in the journal ‘Anaesthesia’1) for the development of Covid-19 related lung ultrasound workforces in the early stages of the global pandemic. This has led to me supporting PoCUS consolidation and expansion in acute internal medicine in the UK and emergency medicine internationally. o UK acute internal medicine: Acute hospital at home (AHAH) and Ambulatory Assessment Unit (AAU) services at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trusto International emergency medicine: collaboration between Wayne State University’s Global Health Alliance (USA) and Kasturba Medical College, Manipal (India). * I lead the development of ultrasound imaging guidelines for Physiotherapists in the UK; specialisms include:o Lung / critical careo Pelvic healtho Ultrasound image guided neurotoxin delivery for spasticity management. o Musculoskeletal disorders and image guided musculoskeletal interventions.* I was commissioned by the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists (ISCP) to develop bespoke solutions for Physiotherapists in the Republic of Ireland to robustly and sustainably use PoCUS:o Working with representatives from the ISCP and other key stakeholders, I led on the development of Ireland’s first guidance for the use of Physiotherapy (PT) PoCUS (approved by ISCP Board in February 2023).* Using the PoCUS framework approach I am also supporting with development of guidelines for the use of ultrasound imaging in Speech and Language Therapy; and supporting scope expansion for Sonographers (e.g with GI scanning).
