About Dr. Moritz Brake
I am an independent consultant, entrepreneur and expert on maritime security and strategy development. In an advisory capacity, I support the development of a sustainable corporate strategy for security provision - with a focus on a maritime clients and taking into account the legal obligations of the management. An important part of customer-oriented solutions is "matchmaking" - the support in the qualified selection of products and services of security providers - with regard to the needs of the maritime industry and in the context of supply chain security of maritime logistics and supply chains. My expertise specifically covers maritime critical infrastructure (shipping, port and offshore facilities, surface and subsea), as well as protection against drones, sabotage, criminal access and cyber threats.As a naval reserve officer, I am an expert on maritime security and strategy at the German Institute for Defence and Strategic Studies (GIDS). With the same focus, I am also a Senior Fellow at the Center for Advanced Security, Strategic and Integration Studies (CASSIS). In September 2022, I graduated from the War Studies Department at King's College London, am a member of the German Maritime Institute (DMI) and an auditeur of the French Institut des Hautes Études de Défense National (IHEDN). In addition to a Master's degree in War Studies from King's College London, I hold a nautical officer's license and an engineering degree in Nautical Science (Jade Hochschule, Elsfleth). In active naval service, I most recently served as a Youth Information Officer, a public citizenship education role for security and defence policy on behalf of the German government. Before this, in addition to sea time on merchant and warships, I served in the UN mission UNIFIL (Eastern Mediterranean, Lebanon, 2007) and the EU anti-piracy mission ATALANTA off the Horn of Africa (2010 & 2011).My particular expertise and areas of interest include: Maritime security, strategy, and the leadership and development of people and organisations. This also includes in particular: cyber security, maritime policy, navigation, ship handling and crisis management, maritime law, ethics and leadership.
