Assist governments to develop policies, programs and projects to achieve food security and to eradicate hunger and malnutrition and develop the agricultural, fisheries and forestry sectors to use their environmental and natural resources in a sustainable manner and to eliminate poverty through economic and social progress by:*Use quantitative and qualitative research methods (i.e. questionnaire design and surveys, organizing workshops, face to face meetings and focus group discussions) to identify agriculture sector issues, possible options and developing action plans*Review past annual development plans and estimate budgets for the action plans to implement a newly approved agriculture policy and achieve its objectives in Sindh province, Pakistan*Contribute in the review of food security policies and programs, country capability and barriers in achieving the relevant UN SDGs (as part of FAO-European Union Food and Nutrition Security Impact, Resilience, Sustainability and Transformation or FIRST Program) in Pakistan

I manage Agriculture Development Policy (ADP) Program which is one of the research programs of ACIAR and operates in both the micro and macro dimensions. At the national level agricultural reform, land use policy, regulation and environmental-management regimes can all facilitate or hinder smallholder farmers’ attempts to take advantage of the productivity gains emerging from research for development. Also the changing global trade and associated impacts on national policy settings add another policy dimension and the program helps in understanding these interactions. ADP program operates both stand-alone projects and supports discipline-based projects across the ACIAR research programs. A key component of both stand-alone and support components to projects across other disciplines is understanding how policies can influence adoption and further the outcomes of technical research. Priority research areas are: macroeconomic management and economic governance; public expenditure providing basic institutional and infrastructure capacities; environmental management; markets and trade; regulations; property rights; taxation regimes and subsidies; land use policy; food security and food safety policy and climate change policy. In addition to helping about 100 ACIAR biophysical focussed research projects, as an RPM of the policy program I have built about 20 economics, policy and institutions focussed projects and their teams in about 12 countries in Asia and the Pacific. Along with the research teams I present findings of innovative but plausible policy options and help in policy formulation and contribute regularly to submissions and reviews including annual reports and internal committees and in the mentoring of staff. In addition I monitor, review including engaging/contracting external reviewers and evaluate the projects’ performance and approve payments.

I supervised honours, masters and PhD students; Collaborated with the Fenner School of Environment & Society, Centre of Water, Environmental Economics and Policy/Crawford School of Public Policy staff in research activities; Delivered lectures on natural resource economics and environmental policy (specifically on environmental water policy, integrated assessment of policies) and food policy and integrated biophysical-economic and mathematical modeling and conjunctive use of surface and groundwater.

My role at CSIRO involved carrying out analyses focussed on climate chnage, water scenarios and water policy and providing advice to resource managers and policy makers dealing with the issue of water scarcity and quality. At CSIRO I was team leader of the hydro-economic modelling team. Also I was Associate Editor of Journal of Hydrology and Guest Editor of Hydrogeology Journal for its special issue on Economics of Groundwater Management.
