"Being able to feel safe with other people is probably the single most important aspect of mental health; safe connections are fundamental to meaningful and satisfying lives." ― Bessel A. van der Kolk, The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of TraumaThis quote speaks to what I strive to achieve in my career as a Clinical Psychologist. It's been my mission to help people build safe connections while understanding and adjusting their own behaviour. As the co-founder of the Breakwater Institute for Occupational Stress and Trauma, I provide mental health services to first responders, military members, and veterans. I also lead peer support training for various first responder agencies in Ontario and collaborate with organizations such as Wounded Warriors Canada and Wayfound. I would be glad to connect with you here on LinkedIn, or you can contact me at nethier@breakwaterinstitute.ca.

Clinical Psychologist, Co-FounderBreakwater Institute For Occupational Stress And Trauma Sep 2017 - PresentCambridge, OntarioBreakwater Institute for Occupational Stress and Trauma is a private practice specializing in assessing and treating first responders and currently serving and former members of the Canadian Armed Forces. At Breakwater, we provide psychological assessment, psychotherapy, and consultation services to First Responders (police officers, paramedics, firefighters, dispatchers, correctional officers, and trauma nurses) and members/veterans of the Canadian Forces who experience operational stress injuries. This work includes consultation with first responder services to provide peer support team training and crisis intervention.A few highlights of my work at Breakwater include:• Facilitating peer support training in collaboration with Wounded Warriors Canada – This program helps first responders improve their ability to recognize and respond to signs of stress and trauma and manage the crucial transition between "home mode" and "responder mode."• Delivering virtual training for Wayfound's Before Operational Stress program (BOS) – BOS is a resiliency-based program that empowers public safety employees to take charge of their mental health. The program uniquely combines theoretical and experiential learning procedures to mitigate the effects of operational stress.
