About Dr Peter Collinge

I am an historian, researcher, writer and public speaker and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. My research interests include eighteenth- and nineteenth century businesses, the Old Poor Law, workhouse gardens, food and drink, and health, leisure and tourism. I have extensive experience of archival research. I am the co-contributing editor of 'Providing for the Poor: the Old Poor Law 1750-1834' (2022) and the author of numerous articles on the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.I have taught undergraduate modules at the University of Liverpool, and on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at Keele University. My teaching encompasses British and European history since 1450, and approaches to sources and debates. Following the completion of my PhD on businesswomen in Georgian Derbyshire, I worked as a postdoctoral researcher on an AHRC-funded project ‘Small Bills and Petty Finance 1700–1834: Co-creating the history of the Old Poor Law’. This was a collaboration between academics at the universities of Keele and Sussex, archive services and volunteers. The project used overseers’ vouchers to examine networks and engagement with the Old Poor Law amongst the non-poor across three counties. After completing my postdoctoral research, I catalogued archive material relating to Keele University's common room and postgraduate association.I present papers regularly at national and international conferences, give guest lectures at academic institutions, and at public engagement events at museums, festivals and history societies. I also organise public workshops and study days. I am on the Advisory Panel for Buxton Crescent Heritage Trust and on the Council of Staffordshire Record Society.
