R&D Specialist
CurrentResponsible for implementing NEMS MEMS and microfluidic technologies into beamlines on Diamond's synchrotron. Such technologies will help push the capabilities of Diamond to be the world leader in Xray imaging.Current projects include designing MEMS devices to contain live cell cultures for IR interogation. The development of graphene sensors for X ray detectionThe use of SAW waves for arraying protein crystals ready for X ray interogationDeveloping interests in digital microfluidicsDeveloping 'Diamond like Carbon' supports for protein crystallography.A MEMS flow cell for interogration of proteins 'in Vivo' conditions for SAXSCryogeniclly cooled sample holders for nanobeam X-ray defraction interogration Additional projects will include looking at the cryogenic cooling of silicon mirrors in the system's monochromators. Reviews of heat sink materials with reduced CTE's (including alloys of negative thermal expansion materials)and new methods of attachement to mirrors will be investigated to ensure optimal cooling and minimal distrotion to the mirror
Principal Mechanical Engineer
Setup a FEA modeling facility at Rofin Sinar. The main purpose of which was for modeling cooling systems for their next generation of CO2 laser electrodes using COMSOL & Solidworks FEA packages. These models needed to characterize turbulent flow within pipes that flow through the electrodes to keep them at constant temperature during use. Different pipe geometries, sizes and orientations were modeled and their effect on thermal stresses and strains within the structures characterized. Critical control of electrode deformation due to these stresses is required to keep the laser operational. Additional models have been developed to look at cooling plate designs for RF transistors along with mount design for Pico-second YAG laser crystals.Material selection for end stops in rotary optical safety shutter. Developed magnetic damping for the same device to eliminate the requirement for stops.Set up a collaboration to review electrode design for controlling laser beam quality from the CO2 lasers .Reviewing eutectic bonding techniques for bonding YAG crystals to their copper heat sinks requiring close matching of thermal coefficients to reduce thermal mismatch.
Project Manager Design Engineer
Built a portable 'Lab on Chip' DNA analyser which involved developing the system from concept to prototype. The sucessful system is capable of extraction,PCR, seperation and detection of a 3 loci multiplex from a human sample comparable with the British FSS database. All the analysis takes place on a single glass chip and within 1 hour. The project involved developmemnt of on chip architecture, DNA primer design and on chip reagent control. In addition all the hardware to carry out the onchip interrogation was also developed. Project value £1.4mAdditional Projects Delivered on:•Designed a lab on chip system for cell sorting healthy and cancerous cells from tumour biopsies. Project value £800k•To develop a lab on chip real time PCR system Project value £80k•Developed a manufacturing process to fabricate the next generation of resonant pressure sensors for GE Druck. Project value £1.2m•Developed nano resonators for attogram mass detection. Applications include gas detection Project value £650k•Micro managed PhD projects which included microfluidic ‘T mixers’, micro rehometers, Chip packaging and RF switch design.•Developed a methodology, tooling and experimental procedure to characterise and subsequently optimize lubrication for forging processes. Project value £78k•A systematic plan for Asquith Butler to become a world class manufacturer of their machines using TQM techniques and other current world leading methods of optimising a company’s performance.Core Skills: •The ability to extract what is required from a project and determine the best possible route to achieving it. •Assembling a team of experts to facilitate delivering the solution to a real outcome. •Ensuring all parties are included and updated in the decision making process to ensure the solution is received favourably.
