I am currently investigating how human epidermal stem cell renewal and lineage selection are controlled by reciprocal interactions within the cellular microenvironment. For this, I use micro-patterning technology to create hexagonal ECM substrates (isolated and bowtie) that control cell spreading and cell-cell contact. I am looking for the potential signalling candidates and trying to decipher how interactions between two of the key signalling pathways regulate epidermal homeostasis.

Designed and investigated several classes of fluorophores (organic, inorganic and metal complex based) to develop probes for early melanoma detection and its specific targeting. I also bio-conjugated novel fluorophores with cancer cell surface receptors to investigate their dynamics. During investigation, I have extensively worked on enzyme kinetics, protein engineering, cell membrane labelling, fluorescence-mediated investigations, molecular biology techniques and live-cell confocal imaging. In the meantime, I also developed a new monomeric version of streptavidin protein (native tetrameric) through protein engineering to probe the cellular events with better efficacy.

Project Title: Verifying diabetes candidate genes through RNAi in Drosophila melanogasterResults Delivered: Identified 4 genes that are involved in metabolic syndrome. Knocked down the candidate genes in vivo to understand its role in the metabolic activity and sugar homeostasis followed by vitro experiments. Added to this, awarded funding from the institute as well.
