Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center serves as the hub for cancer diagnosis and treatment for UHealth – University of Miami Health System. Their mission is to reduce the human burden from cancer and other serious illnesses through research, education, prevention, and the delivery of quality patient care. As a Six Sigma Lean Green Belt Process Improvement intern, my role was integral in not only fulfilling the organization’s mission but also in achieving the aim of my project to reduce the cycle time it takes for a patient to receive treatment in the CTU and to improve patient and organizational satisfaction.• Participating in the development and implementation of strategic project plans and delivery• Coordinating with leadership team members and aiding in presentations• Evaluating data and trends• Identifying inadequate data reporting structure in CTU clinic by cross-referencing patient inputted acuity level with medication/treatment received by patient to pinpoint discrepancies in data reporting and identify actual time spent in treatment versus projected time spent• Collaborating with senior management to assess requirements and implement processes for continued support• Developing team resources, project plans, and implementation strategy• Applying Six Sigma tools including the following: flowcharts, FMEA’s, Affinity diagrams, Gantt Charts, control charts, pareto charts, dot plots, histograms, and run-throughput charts• Facilitating core team meetings with functional department deliverables• Leading structured project planning sessions to develop schedules with critical path items

The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine WalkSafe program was developed to improve pediatric pedestrian safety, increase physical activity levels through encouraging children to walk to and from school, and improve the walkability in and around elementary schools. As a research assistant, one participates in the design, execution, analysis and evaluation of Walk Safe/Bike Safe Programs.• Handling and protecting confidential and sensitive data with integrity • Assisting staff in design and maintenance of online surveys and relational databases • Managing data collection projects by meeting paper and electronic mailing deadlines, entering data • Assisting staff and clients in the design, execution and evaluation of research projects, including literature reviews, surveys, focus groups, data integration and analysis. • Producing written, tabular and visual materials for research reports and presentations. • Assisting staff in logistical management of the office, including acquisition of supplies, inventory management, bookkeeping and strategic planning. • Preparing print documents, web pages, and other graphics• Conducting and participating in meetings with school administration regarding SRTS WalkSafe curriculum.

Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CPPW) is a two-year grant sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control that expands the use of evidence-based strategies and programs, mobilizes local resources at the community-level, and strengthen the capacity of states. The initiative has a strong emphasis on policy and environmental change at both the state and local levels and will: increase levels of physical activity; improve nutrition; decrease obesity rates; and decrease smoking prevalence via teen smoking prevention and deterring second-hand smoke exposure among children. The Miami-Dade Department of Health’s Office of Community Health and Planning is facilitating the project in partnership with Consortium for a Healthier Miami-Dade. It is the aim of the project to identify a set of goals, objectives, and strategies that will guide the community toward a joint effort in addressing the pervasive diseases associated with obesity and the lifestyle risk factors of physical inactivity and poor nutrition that affect the health climate of Miami-Dade.• Assisting with identifying policy, environmental and system changes priorities• Conducting health policy research and analysis• Developing policy communication plans, health policy briefs, talking points, public release reports, and presentations used in public hearings• Attending committee meetings and undertaking special projects to advance the interests of Communities Putting Prevention to Work, Miami-Dade County Department of Health’s Office of Community Health and Planning, and the Consortium for a Healthier Miami-Dade County
