My doctoral thesis involved treatment of pre-treated textile dye effluent using two systems; one being secondary biological treatment system of aerobic moving bed biofilm process followed by tertiary system of adsorption using low-cost biochar prepared from rice husk.• The initial phase of the study focussed on characterization of textile dye effluent which required analysis of physical and chemical parameters and concentrations of heavy metals.• The treatment of the effluent was accomplished at laboratory scale by secondary biological treatment system using aerobic moving bed biofilm reactor which used AnoxKaldnes K3 biocarriers.• The tertiary treatment system followed the secondary method in which adsorption technique was employed using biochar as a low-cost adsorbent derived from rice husk which is an agricultural waste.

The training was concerned with the environmental impact assessment of expansion of Fe-Mn Plant of Tata Steel Limited at Joda, Keonjhar District, Odisha, India.
