The Phone-paid Services Authority regulates premium rate phone-paid services in the UK after designation by Ofcom under the Communications Act 2003.In June 2016 I was appointed as one of the Chairs of the Independent Code Adjudication Panel, making decisions under PPP's new, 14th Code. For the five years before, from July 2011, I was Chair of PhonepayPlus's (somewhat under-used) Independent Appeals Body (IAB).

Until I retired in February 2017 - statutorily required on my 70th birthday - I was an Information Rights Judge (dealing with Freedom of Information and Data Protection Act appeals) an Immigration Judge and one of six Judges in the General Regulatory Chamber appointed to deal with appeals from The Pensions Regulator (TPR). I was a Mental Health Judge and Deputy District Judge (Crime) from 2004 - 2011.

Adjudicator in respect of s.25 Consumer Credit Act 1974 in "minded to revoke" or "minded to refuse" issues in Consumer Credit Licence cases which - from 1 April 2014 - is dealt with by the FCA/RDC. My work in this area concentrated on appropriate business methods of Pay Day loan suppliers and the enforcement provisions within the industry.

• For nearly 8 years I was responsible for all youth law issues – administrative, judicial and political – at Thames Magistrates’ Court as Youth Justices’ Clerk. Nearly 3% of all the youth crime in England and Wales comes from the work at this court centre (from Camden, Hackney, Islington, Tower Hamlets and the City of London). This post has involved significant contact with successive Home Secretaries, the Attorney General, the Youth Justice Board, the Department for Constitutional Affairs, the Judicial Studies Board and the Chief Executives of borough and pan-London agencies together with work personally chairing area inter-agency criminal justice groups.

• For nearly 8 years from 1991 – 1999 I worked with the Crown Prosecution Service in London. I was the lead lawyer in prosecutions related to the national organiser of the British National Party (BNP), the stabbing and robbery of the Director of Public Prosecution’s (DPP’s) husband, the murder of the West London head teacher Philip Lawrence and the canal bank rape of an Austrian tourist by seven youths. I led/managed a team of 20 prosecuting lawyers and 40 administrative staff and dealt with visits from and briefings to Ministers and senior politicians.

• For 10 years from 1981 – 1991 I was a City-based consultant specialising in defending companies facing contested take-overs and amalgamations and dealing with corporate crisis management. From 1984 – 1989 I was a director of Shandwick Consultants plc where, in addition to client responsibilities (including Ernst & Young, Slaughter and May, 3i, Dixons plc, TI Group plc and Norcross plc) I was Compliance Officer and – latterly – Company Secretary for Shandwick UK plc.

• I practised as a barrister for 5 years from 1977 doing general common law work as a tenant at 3 Hare Court, Middle Temple Lane, EC4. I dealt with criminal defence and prosecution work at the Crown Court, Divisional Court and Court of Appeal as well as common law work within the Queen’s Bench, Family and Chancery Divisions of the High Court.

• For 3 years I was senior law lecturer at Harlow College, Essex, from 1974. During this time I taught press law to post-graduate journalism students (including Alan Rusbridger / editor of The Guardian and Frances Gibb / legal correspondent of The Times). I also wrote Press Law (Sweet & Maxwell 1977).

• I worked as a journalist for the Eastern Daily Press and Eastern Evening News in East Anglia for 4 years before starting my legal studies.
