About Dr Robin Callender Smith

I am an author at ARBITA, the publisher of my historical novels as Kindle eBooks on Amazon. I am also a media lawyer specialising in defamation, data protection, confidential information issues and privacy law. I work as a rota lawyer for The Sun, The Sun on Sunday, The Times and The Sunday Times.I am Honorary Professor of Media Law at Queen Mary, University of London's Centre for Commercial Law Studies after completing a late-life PhD there 10 years ago.I worked as a Tribunal Judge dealing with Data Protection and Freedom of Information, Immigration and Asylum, Mental Health and - as a Deputy District Judge - crime in London and on the South East circuit. I wrote the practitioners textbook “Celebrity and Royal Privacy, the Media and the Law” and was an editor of the Encyclopaedia of Data Protection and Privacy. I was a Deputy Chairman of the FCA's Regulatory Decisions Committee (RDC), a former member of OFGEM's independent Enforcement Decision Panel and a Lay Member of the Executive Board of the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII). I led a Council of Europe team of experts dealing with Open Justice, privacy and transparency measures to improve access to judicial decisions in Kazakhstan.I was educated in Scotland, New Zealand, England - at Gresham's School, Norfolk - and the USA at The Taft School, Conn, as an English-Speaking Union scholar. I worked as a journalist for 4 years before gaining my Law Degree at Queen Mary, University of London in 1973 and then my Bar Finals in 1974. I am a past member of the Bar Council of England & Wales and Gray’s Inn Barristers’ Committee.Specialties: Data privacy, confidential information, media law & reputation management and writing historical fiction based on real characters and events. My real life experiences as a former journalist, lawyer and judge provide a wellspring of source material.

Nearly 3% of all the youth crime in England and Wales comes from the work at this court centre (from Camden, Hackney, Islington, Tower Hamlets and the City of London). This post has involved significant contact with successive Home Secretaries, the Attorney General, the Youth Justice Board, the Department for Constitutional Affairs, the Judicial Studies Board and the Chief Executives of borough and pan-London agencies together with work personally chairing area inter-agency criminal justice groups.
