An authority on glaucoma and population-based eye diseases, Rohit Varma, M.D, M.P.H., has undertaken projects that have changed U.S. public health policy and benefitted key communities. As the CMO for the CHA Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center (HPMC), Dr. Varma directs care delivery for a 434-bed hospital with three stand-alone medical centers, the Southern California Eye Institute (SCEI), Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit and Sub-Acute Long-Term Care Unit, that employ 600 physicians. As a servant leader, he fosters an inclusive, Just Culture that enriches employee and leadership development and physician workforce retention. He builds accountable teams that deliver best practice health care that enhances patient health outcomes. A world-class physician, he collaborates with key stakeholders to: implement strategic initiatives; improve health system operations, access to care, financial performance and centers of excellence; and attain quality, regulatory and safety standards. He achieves scalable growth by: creating partnerships with other hospitals and health systems, executing CapEX projects, raising visit volumes and containing costs.Dr. Varma co-founded the Southern California Eye Institute (SCEI), an Ophthalmology Center of Excellence in 2018 to: deliver cutting-edge, highly specialized eye care; conduct population-based research to prevent, detect and further the treatment of visual impairment and blindness; provide community-based indigent care; and educate Ophthalmic Technician and medical students.As the Founding Director of the USC Roski Eye Institute, he served as Chair and Professor of Ophthalmology and Preventive Medicine and later Dean of the Keck School of Medicine of USC while holding the Grace & Emery Beardsley Chair in Ophthalmology. Receiving continuous funding from the NIH for more than two decades, he has pursued research on glaucoma and the epidemiology of eye disease, publishing more than 300 peer-reviewed journal articles and writing and editing three books. Dr. Varma has served as a principal investigator for the African American Eye Disease Study, Los Angeles Latino Eye Study, Chinese American Eye Study and Multi-Ethnic Pediatric Eye Diseases Study.
