Dr Ruby Moynihan Magsig is a Senior International Advisor to the NZ Government Department of Conservation and a Senior Research Fellow/Adjunct Lecturer at the Faculty of Law, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. Ruby's international legal and policy advisory portfolios are in the area of international environmental law and policy where she leads and contributes, on behalf of New Zealand, to the development and implementation of international treaties regarding the protection and sustainable use of marine and freshwater ecosystems and biodiversity.Ruby is a current New Zealand Royal Society Marsden Awardee - Te Pūtea Rangahau a Marsden, working on a project entitled 'Reimagining ocean law to achieve equitable and sustainable use of marine ecosystems'. Ruby’s general research and teaching examines how international and comparative national law evolves to address complex environmental challenges in a changing geopolitical world. She specializes in the areas of law of the sea, freshwater law, biodiversity and human rights where she explores questions of natural resources equity, justice and the interface between law, science, and policy.Ruby regularly contributes to high-level collaborative law and policy advice for UNESCO World Water Assessment Programme, the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the UN (FAO), UN Economic Commission for Europe, World Wide Fund for Nature, International Union for the Conservation of Nature, GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit), and Adelphi International. Ruby is a Review Editor for Frontiers in Climate Law and Policy, an invited expert of the Wuhan International Water Law Academy at the University of Wuhan, China, the IUCN Commission on Environmental Law, Specialist Group on Water and Wetlands and the European Environmental Law Forum. Previously, Ruby worked as a Lecturer at the University College Cork, Ireland, a Research Associate at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research, Department of Environmental and Planning Law, Germany, and at the UNESCO Centre for Water Law, Policy and Science, University of Dundee, Scotland. Prior to that she worked as a Barrister and Solicitor in one of New Zealand’s premier law firms.
