In these days of C-19, we have had to rethink the way that schools work with parents and have had to adopt a 'learning together - apart' approach. This has meant developing a new paradigm of family-school partnership, and has given us the opportunity to reset our concept of what learning is, who can teach our children, and what it is they can learn.This is the focus of my recently completed PhD and so, until I begin a new senior leadership position in the southern academic year, I will focus on writing a book supporting schools to do exactly this. My book will support school leaders to move away from a school centred parent partnership approach (think "open door policy') and adopt a student centred partnership approach commensurate with the age that we live in.

During this time, I was seconded to be a Management Advisor with The University of Waikato, working alongside principals, supporting them in their leadership and management roles.

Waiterimu School is a small school in the farming district of the Waikato. It caters for children from Year 1-Year 8.During my Principalship, I was selected to be a Research Affiliate with The University of Waikato. This meant that I was able to conduct research on a topical issue fulltime for six months. My research was entitled 'Perceptions of Rural Schools: Staff, Parent and Community Views'. This was a comparative study that sought to understand the perceptions that rural school staff, parents and the community through their voices and experiences, supplemented with an understanding of how these perceptions impacted each group and their ability to function within the community, as well as highlighting the limitations of being in such a group.
