He will be bringing a fresh perspectives on the government policy work, and a conduit for bringing scientific expertise into the Australian government policy process. He is an experienced academician/scientist with a demonstrated history of working in the tertiary education industry (RMIT, Monash, CSIRO, and New York University) and conducting highly multidisciplinary translational research. He is skilled in Research and Development (R&D), science policy, disruptive innovations, and technology entrepreneurship.Dr Soni is the founder-director for RMIT Technology and Entrepreneurship Network & Club and helping people with a shared interest in innovations, translation and research commercialisation. Dr. Soni has been trained as a microbiologist and further utilised the underlined principles and methodologies to develop his research profile in nanobiotechnology, microbial diagnostics, and nanotherapeutics, leading to achieving the overarching goal of his research for 'sustainable mitigation of Public Health Risks' by engaging with society, organizations, public and private, communities and individuals. The potential and impact of his research include transformation in the way biosolids are managed in Australia which paves the way for improved and more environmentally sustainable practices globally; novel methods for nanobiomaterials’ synthesis & applications, point of care microbial detection technology for risk mitigation; policy change in regard to the storage and release of recycled water; optimization of the use of sunscreens (and toxic pollutants) in the marine/aquatic environment; and inhaled nano- therapeutics for deadly tuberculosis.

Taking inspiration from nature, a range of synthetic organic molecules and peptides have been used to synthesize functional nanomaterials that have advanced our understanding of template-directed assembly of organic-inorganic nano-scale objects under equilibrium conditions. Most of the self-assembly studies have hitherto explored the aqueous media as fluid phase for self-assembly of amphiphilic bio-macromolecules, wherein the architectural modification of biomolecules is generally a pre-requisite for self-assembly of modified biomolecules. Furthermore, ionic liquids (ILs) can act as non-aqueous designer solvents to self-assemble biomacromolecules without requiring their prior modification. ILs (commonly referred to as room temperature molten salts or room-temperature ILs) have recently become attractive reaction media for the “green” synthesis of nanomaterials due to their unique physicochemical properties such as high viscosity, high ionic conductivity, high thermal and chemical stability, and negligible volatility. Dr Soni's research focusing on the self-assembly of biomolecules (enzymes, DNA, cellulose etc.) in various ILs (~15 papers) can also provide an exciting expansion of our theoretical understanding of nano-bio interfacial molecular self-assembly by exploring such processes in non-aqueous media. Moreover, the utilization of self-assembled biomacromolecules as in situ self-catalyzing templates for the synthesis of functional hybrid nanomaterials in IL is interesting as these nanostructures retain the functionality of biomolecules for multiple newer applications in biomedicine.
