Dr. Mirowitz is recognized for his innovative contributions to imaging, for being a program builder, prolific author and researcher and his work in preventive care and public health. As a radiologist specializing in MRI, Mirowitz was helped establish one of the first comprehensive body MRI clinical programs. He has a demonstrated ability to identify a clinical problem, research a solution, and quickly apply it to patient care. He invented rapid acquisition spin echo imaging that made MRI faster and more accurate.His text Pitfalls, Variants and Artifacts in Body MR Imaging, was the first to address diagnostic errors in MRI; it was named a Best Health Science Book. He co-edited one of the first texts on Cardiovascular MRI and another on Body MRI. He is a prolific researcher and lecturer, publishing more than 170 scientific papers and book chapters and delivering more than 150 national and international scientific presentations and invited lectures. He served as editor of MR Clinics of North America and on numerous editorial boards.Mirowitz has been recognized as a Fellow of the American College of Radiology, Society of Advanced Body Imaging, American College of Healthcare Executives and American College of Physician Executives. He received the Whitley Award and the Roentgen Centennial Fellow Award for creating an innovative resident curriculum in healthcare economics and management.Mirowitz earned his bachelor’s degree summa cum laude in comparative religious studies from Tulane University—where he later earned a master’s degree in health systems management—and his medical degree from Washington University, where he continued for residency and fellowship. At Washington University he was professor and chief of Radiology at Barnes-Jewish Hospital N Campus and led physician planning and design of radiology for the Center for Advanced Medicine and Siteman Cancer Center. In 2001 he was recruited to the University of Pittsburgh, becoming the nation's youngest radiology chair. He grew the Department’s clinical, research and educational programs substantially, leading it to become the nation’s largest academic radiology department. He later had a transformative effect on Chicago’s Loyola University Health System/Stritch School of Medicine, serving as professor and chair of the Department of Radiology and Medical Imaging, regional medical director of Radiology, medical director of virtual health and on the Health System’s Board of Directors. Mirowitz has become a certified practitioner and national leader in the emerging field of functional medicine.
