However, you only see what you know, which is why I studied art history in Munich and Paris. I wanted to know more to see better and I saw much to learn even more. So much so that, in a perfume advertisement by Davidoff lurks a Deposition from the Cross by Botticelli.Out of history into the present time. This was precisely the theme that drove me forward as I researched for my PhD thesis in Paris on Harry Kessler and modern French art. While poring over a folio in the Cabinet des Dessins, I became a motion picture editor for RTL2.From the painted heavens of the Bibliothèque Nationale, to the darkrooms of Quentin Tarantino, and straight through the trash culture of the 1990s. This leap reflected the times that also brought together Cicciolina and Jeff Koons, Murakami and Louis Vuitton.I went from television to journalism and finally, to fashion. I reported on avant-garde designers throughout Europe for Burda - from London and Paris all the way to Istanbul, from the Antwerp Six to Vivienne Westwood’s Berlin ten years after the wall came down. It was an exercise that paved the way for the years between 2007 and 2009 in which I had the opportunity, as a member of the editorial board of AMICA, to attend the Parisian fashion shows with the New York photographer Roxanne Lowit. I went backstage with Alexander McQueen, sat in the Studio with Karl Lagerfeld or Maria Grazia Chiuri. These encounters showed me how these designers outlast the trends they create and what truly counts in the high end market: quality and personality.In new and varied forms, these were the topics of my features, reports, essays and interviews when, in June 2011, I took the position as Vice Editor in Chief & Style Director of German AD, Architectural Digest.It is an exciting job to be responsible for the major topics as well as the many small details that distinguish a magazine such as AD. It is exciting to work with the best journalists, stylists and photographers in the field. It is exciting to choose designs and images from the wealth of options available today and to tell the stories that affect our readers most. It is also exciting to entertain people for so many years and to become a voice in international magazine journalism. What could be more exciting? The PICTURES AND STORIES of the future.
