Dr Tamara Phiri is a consultant and specialist in Internal Medicine.She has wide clinical, academic and research experience.She was a visiting lecturer on the Masters in Global Health and Infectious Diseases course at Karolinska Institute, a premier medical institution and teaching hospital in Sweden. She was an examiner for the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene course run in Tanzania and Makerere University, Uganda. She is a recurring guest lecturer on tropical medicine courses at the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine, Germany and the University of Liverpool.She is involved in research in the fields of COVID-19, stroke, heart disease, diabetes and non-communicable diseases where she is part of several international research consortia. She has publications in the field of diabetes and non-communicable diseases, stroke, COVID-19 and other clinical conditions encountered during her clinical work.She is an editor and contributing author on three editions of a local clinical handbook. She is a contributing author in an international textbook on Medicine. She has been a peer reviewer for medical journals including the Lancet Global Health, Malawi Medical Journal, International Health (Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene), and Tropical Doctor (Royal Society of Medicine).Dr Phiri is the founding and current president of the Malawi College of Physicans. She leads a specialist training program for doctors in Malawi to specialize in Internal Medicine along with partner institutions in Kenya, Zambia, Uganda, Zimbabwe and Tanzania under the East Central and Southern Africa College of Physicians. Dr Phiri has played a key leadership role in the setting up and running of COVID-19 wards at QECH since the start of the COVID pandemic. She is the clinical lead for the Malawi Stroke Unit project - Malawi’s first multidisciplinary stroke unit in conjunction with University College London.For her work, she has been recognized and featured on CNN International and Malawian media houses (MBC TV and Radio, Times TV and Radio, Zodiak TV and Radio). For outstanding work as a leading woman physician, she was awarded the McMillan Stewart Foundation Grant for Women Physicians in Africa in 2017. In March 2021, she was recognized by NICO Group Malawi as a leading icon for Women’s Month and awarded a grant. In June 2021, she was awarded the Presidential Award for excellence in the health sector and outstanding service by the president of the Republic of Malawi, Dr Lazarus Chakwera.
