About Timothy L. Jones, Ph.D. Lt Col Usaf (Ret)

Lieutenant Colonel Timothy L. Jones retired from Active Duty effective 1-Mar-24. His last assignment was as Director of Operations and Professor of Acquisition Management with the Defense Acquisition University (DAU) at Fort Belvoir, VA. He managed the day to day operations of the Capital and Northeast regional DAU campuses and taught various acquisition program management certification courses to the DoD workforce. He also served as DAU’s Senior Military leader. Lt Col Jones was commissioned through Officer Training School (OTS) in 1997. He is prior-enlisted and initially entered the Air Force in 1984. As a Fire Protection Specialist he worked as a Firefighter and Fire Instructor for 13 years before attaining his commission. After graduating from OTS, then Lieutenant Jones was assigned to Hanscom Air Force Base, MA as an Acquisition Project Officer. There, he was responsible for acquiring a web-based collaboration tool for the Air Force and pinned on the rank of Captain. He was then selected for instructor duty at the Academic Instructor School, Maxwell AFB, AL in 2001. After completing his instructor tour he was assigned to the Space and Missiles Systems Center in Los Angeles where he was Chief of Management Operations for the Development Plans Directorate (SMC/XR). Following that assignment, then Major Jones was the Commander of Mission Support at the Advanced Space Operations School (ASOpS) in Colorado Springs, CO. He managed the day to day operations of the school leading a faculty and staff of 60+ personnel in addition to supporting 1,600 students annually. From there he was assigned to DAU in Los Angeles where he was the Site Director and Program Management Professor. During his time at DAU, Lt Col Jones completed a six month deployment to Kabul, Afghanistan in 2013 where he was Chief of the Foreign Military Sales Training Branch. His next assignment was with the 377th Air Base Wing at Kirtland AFB, NM where he served as the Inspector General. As the IG, Lt Col Jones provided compliance oversight and complaint resolution for 28,600+ personnel in 3 wings and 75+ associate units. Prior to his current DAU assignment in the Washington D.C. area, Lt Col Jones was Chief of the Strategic Plans and Engagements Division of the Joint U.S. Military Affairs Group-Korea (JUSMAG-K). He was responsible for the SECDEF-directed International Armaments Cooperation Program for Korea and was a key liaison between the US & Republic of Korea governments.
