I am a constructed wetland specialist with over 25 years’ experience in the research, design, construction and operation of ecological technologies for wastewater treatment. I have published over 25 scientific papers, given keynote presentations at international conferences and taught post-graduate courses on treatment wetlands.Since completing my PhD (2004), I have worked in New Zealand, Fiji, Denmark, Germany, the USA and throughout the Middle East applying the full spectrum of wetland technologies across a broad range of applications, including treatment of sewage, sludge, oilfield production water, landfill leachate, industrial effluents and agricultural runoff. Noteworthy in this was the world's largest industrial constructed wetland system, with >1200 ha of surface flow wetlands and ponds for managing 175 ML/d of oilfield wastewater in the desert of Oman. As Head of the Treatment Wetland Competence Centre at BAUER Resources (2011-2015), I was involved with the design, construction and operation of this flagship example of what can be achieved with eco-technologies. I have continued as a technical advisor to BAUER for this and other wetland projects they are developing internationally.In 2017 we established the company Wetland & Ecological Treatment Systems (WETSystems) as a focused and specialised vehicle for delivering state-of-the-art expertise in Nature-Based Solutions and constructed wetland technology throughout Australia and internationally. We operate out of Nelson Bay in the beautiful Port Stephens are of NSW, Australia; the traditional lands of the Worimi First Nations people, whom we acknowledge, and pay respect to their Elders, past, present and emerging.
