About Wing Ng

Wing Ng has over thirty years of experience working in fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and aero-acoustics of gas turbine engines and aeropropulsion. He and his research team have pioneered some of the applications of active flow and noise control in turbine engines. He has given many invited lectures on his research, both in the US and abroad. Wing Ng has directed about one hundred PhD dissertations and masters’ theses. Three of his doctoral students have received national society awards for their research. Combining his funding from VaTech and Techsburg, he has received in excess of $40 million in research from industries (Rolls-Royce, Pratt & Whitney, General Electric, Siemens, Honeywell, Solarturbines, Northrop-Grumman…etc) and government agencies (NASA, DoD, NIH…etc). Dr. Ng has over 220 publications in the areas of propulsion and gas turbines. In 1998, with approval from VaTech, Wing has founded a high tech, spin-off company. The company, Techsburg, Inc, has grown from 2 employees to the current level of 20 employees, with revenue of over $3.5 million/yr. As a full time faculty at VaTech, Wing’s role in the company is limited to less than one day per week. In this capacity, Wing has provided leadership and strategic planning to guide the company to its current success. He hired key partners of the company, set up a system of reward to motivate employees. He has learned what it takes to build a team and provide the leadership to manage and grow a company. http://www.techsburg.com/engr/https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Wing_Ng7http://www.me.vt.edu/people/faculty/wing-ng/https://www.facebook.com/wing.ng.123276

Provide leadership and strategic planning for a twenty employees, high tech company. Techsburg engages in applied research and development (mostly proprietary and secret) for aerospace companies, gas turbine industries and government laboratories, with focus in unmanned air vehicle (UAV), aero-propulsion and turbomachineryRESEARCH AT TECHSBURG, INC (Major technical accomplishments):As a key contributor to a team led by Honeywell Aerospace, Techsburg, through wind tunnel and flight tests, has reduced the acoustic signature and improved on the controllability of the 18” T-Hawk hovering UAV. The T-Hawk was used in combat in Iraq, Afghanistan, and in civilian reconnaissance in the Japan’s nuclear power plant damaged by the tsunami (Wall Street J., April 20, 2011).Working with Northrop-Grumman and airplane propeller manufacturers (Hartzell and McCauley), through wind tunnel and flight tests, has improved the aerodynamic performance and reduced noise (>10 dB) from propeller driven military aircrafts. Results being used in the next generation manned and unmanned military airplanes. (Secret)Research programs with GE Aircraft Engines and Pratt&Whitney to improve the aerodynamic performance of low pressure turbines (LPT) at extremely low Reynolds number for very high altitude propulsion turbine engines. Using Techsburg’s unique, low pressure (1 psia) transonic cascade wind tunnel, families of LPT airfoils were tested and evaluated. The best performing blade geometry was then used in future production engines. This resulted in significant reduction in the specific fuel consumption and improved the range of military engines. (Proprietary)Summary: At Techsburg, Inc, Ng is responsible for accumulative, total revenue of ~$30M. Annual revenue for Techsburg is over $3M.
