Dan Rosenstark is an iOS Engineer at Instagram with a deep passion for music and technology. Known as the author of MIDI Designer, he continues to merge creativity and engineering, crafting tools and experiences that connect and inspire.Some history:After a stint in academia (MA in Sociology from UW) -- Dan arrived in San Francisco. There, propelled by the dot-Com tech explosion, he solidified his career as a Java programmer with Esurance. While there, Esurance sent Dan to India to evaluate out-sourcing opportunities. This trip triggered his wanderlust, and as the dot-Com bubble deflated, Dan departed for Spain. There, he was hired by Borland as a Corporate Trainer, focusing on OO, UML, J2EE and XML. There he worked with hundreds of top-tier developers/students in Spain and England.From Spain, he headed to Argentina, and began his immersion in electronic music production.  He created an online remixer in Flash for his NJ-based band THroNG. In 2008, frustrated with MIDI controller hardware in his own music, Dan created MJDJ and Virtual Thang, the predecessors of MIDI Designer. They acted as a MIDI middle-man between hardware and the final MIDI target.Dan began working on iPad apps for Thingee, a NJ firm, in 2008 and returned to the US in 2009. Dan authored MIDI Designer, which has won awards and praise from passionate pros like Todd Rundgren and top-flight Music Industry publications like Recording Magazine. In 2013, MIDI Designer launched a version in partnership with Casio Music Instruments. In 2014, the App was featured for several weeks on the Apple homepage.MIDI Designer now has over 200,000 users and an active and passionate community sharing and discussing layouts created with MIDI Designer.  In 2015 he released two separate apps and formed a partnership to create Music IO, a professional iOS utility app that has been lauded by iOS musicians of all stripes.In 2017 he returned to the grind (as a Senior iOS Engineer) in Manhattan with ShopKeep, the best POS for iPad and Android tablet (acquired by LightSpeed in 2020). Then in 2019, Dan took a job with Facebook and began work on the Home Surface of the Instagram app on iOS. In 2023 Dan left Facebook (now Meta) to refocus on MIDI Designer, before returning to Instagram in 2024 to continue building innovative experiences for iOS users.
