Australian War Memorial, Canberra Act

Based in the Military History Section (MHS) at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, the summer scholarship aims to simulate the demands placed on an institutional historian, allowing history students to gain an understanding of the range and significance of the AWM's collections and of the work of historians within a major cultural institution.The scholarship is six weeks in length with each scholar allocated a specific research project in line with the AWM's own research interests. My research examined the performance of the 9th Australian Infantry Brigade at First Passchendaele in 1917. The scholarship culminated in a written report and a presentation of my findings to the senior management of the AWM and interested others.Working relationships were developed with other departments within the AWM, particularly the Research Centre. Networking took place with scholars and employees from other Canberra institutions such as the Australian Army History Unit (AAHU), Museum of Australian Democracy, National Library of Australia and Old Parliament House.

Centre D'Accueil, Thiepval And Historial De La Grande Guerre, Péronne

This scholarship was a joint initiative between The Royal British Legion and HRH The Prince of Wales that involved spending six weeks on the Somme battlefields.Based at the Thiepval Visitors Centre, the scholarship encouraged close work with Historial de la Grande Guerre at Péronne and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission at Beaurains. Working relationships were developed with Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) through their student guides at Beaumont Hamel and Vimy as well as the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge through their school volunteer schemes.The scholarship culminated in a 20,000 word written report considering aspects of commemoration and remembrance during the First World War.
