The Boston Housing Authority (BHA) is the biggest landlord in the city of Boston. The BHA currently manages many types of subsidies, including Tenant and Project Based Section 8, VASH, other mobile vouchers and Public Housing.As Occupancy Specialist for the Public Housing program, my responsibilities include screening potential new tenants, running briefing sessions for new applicants, and supporting the Public Housing Occupancy Department in any other duty as needed.The screening process is a lengthy process in which applicants must submit a final application, proof of income, birth, assets and 3 year housing history. Once most documents are collected, I proceed to verify all references, do a CORI check, reach out to previous landlords among other duties.

I work with homeless and at-risk elders towards securing permanent, affordable/subsidized housing. As Senior Case Manager, I help supervise a team of 4 housing advocates for homeless elders and 1 at-risk advocate for people who are at risk of becoming homeless; this includes providing case coverage, resources, support and training when needed. I manage our online resource database and I collect data towards an ongoing housing resource document project. Part of my caseload is Money Follows the Person which is a program designed to move current residents of long-term care to independent, assisted or congregate housing within the community. I facilitate a socialization group for homeless or formerly homeless elders called "Back On Our Feet"; I also facilitate the CAC (Community Advisory Council) in which residents of our many housing projects come together to provide positive and constructive feedback to our Senior Management towards policy change and improvement of the management and day-to-day life in each of the buildings.To fulfill requirements put in place by our funders, I do 6 and 12 month retention assessments to verify that our newly housed clients have been able to keep their housing after six months and a year of signing a lease.My position also includes reaching out to providers to connect to possible clients, coordinate shelter walk-in hours, schedule meetings with current clients, provide housing advocacy to a caseload of 25 individuals who most of them are homeless elders, participate in training and provider meetings, collaborate with shelters and other housing and/or support providers, provide support during the screening/interview/move-in process and keep constant communication during the six month stabilization period after clients are housed to make sure they are able to keep their newly acquired lease.

The State recognizes elderly as those over the age of 60, the Federal Government uses 62 as the age of recognition. However, due to the many health issues that the majority of the elder population suffers, Hearth's Outreach works with individuals ages 50 and over, regardless of their race, ethnicity, religion, disability status, veteran status, immigration status, gender identity and sexual orientation.
