Market exploration on the use of liquid desiccant solutions, such as aqueous solutions of lithium chloride and calcium chloride, as absorption thermal batteries. Desiccant solutions have the potential to recover ultra-low grade heat sources that would otherwise be wasted, store energy into a concentrated solution and transport it elsewhere so that the energy stored in thermo-chemical form can be exploited for temperature and humidity control processes (dehumidification, cooling, space heating and humidification). By using desiccant solutions, thermal energy can be stored in thermo-chemical form within the concentration variation between the diluted and the concentrated desiccant solution.Looking forward to connecting with people who are interested in heat recovery, humidity control, humidity removal, manufacturing industry and residential and commercial buildings to discuss how our technology could reduce energy consumption whilst providing optimal temperature and humidity control.

DEcarbonisation of Low TemperAture Process Heat Industry, DELTA PHI (EPSRC Reference: EP/T022981/1)This project aims to investigate the feasibility of using low-temperature heat wasted from industrial processes for on-site application or exporting this waste heat using liquid desiccant technology to neighbouring areas for temperature and humidity control application, allowing significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and providing additional revenue sources. Experimental tests were conducted to better understand the operation of the liquid desiccant technology and identify optimal operational conditions and working fluids depending on the application. Testing included the characterisation and operation of the first-of-a-kind thermochemical district network experimental rig for the recovery of low-temperature heat from multiple sources and use for multiple end-users. Results from experimental measurements were used to develop an improved model for the prediction and optimisation of the performance of the liquid desiccant rig and the development of techno-economic models.
