Dr. Fares is currently leading the research program of CAHS-PVAMU. He led the Graduate Program of the NREM-University of Hawaii. He also has been involved in studying how to solve contemporary natural resource use problems and assisting in sound decision making for optimizing land use and managing natural resources. He developed, tested, and used different water management models. His research activities generated over 13 Million dollars and more than 100 publications. Dr. Fares contributed to shape many best management practices for citrus in Florida, wastewater management in South Australia, and production units in Tunisia. He mentored 7 researchers, 6 professors and 19 graduate students. He also severed on 18 student graduate committees. He organized several international conferences and workshops. He severed on editorial boards of several international journals. Dr. Fares has been consulting for several private companies on different natural resource management issues especially water quantity and quality management issues.
Professor And Graduate Program Chair
Professor of Watershed Hydrology at the Natural Resources and Environmental Management Department (NREM), College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, University of Hawai'i at Manoa. Since 2002, my research and teaching of watershed hydrology program have been playing a vital role in NREM where I have been studying natural resources and environmental management in a multi-disciplinary team with complementing expertise in physical, biological, economical, and social sciences. I also have been involved in studying how to solve contemporary natural resource use problems and assisting in sound decision making for optimizing land use and managing agricultural and forestry systems, watersheds, and landscapes in an ecologically sound manner. My research program is funded through local, national and international research grants totaling over $ 20.0 million dollars of which over $ 2.0 million dollars for projects that I am serving as the principal investigator. The modeling component of my research program is supported by different projects among them a project funded by NOAA that aims to evaluate the performance of N-SPECT, a watershed model develop by NOAA, as a management tool to evaluate the effect of land use changes on pollutant movement through coastal watersheds, using field measured data.
Researcher
I worked on developing irrigation and nitrogen best management practices for citrus grown on deep Florida sandy soils. I used real-time soil water monitoring devices, (tensiometers, neutron probe and capacitance probe), to optimize irrigation and nutrient management practices for citrus crops across central Florida. In addition, I worked on effective rainfall, citrus evapotranspiration, and excess water and nutrient losses below the rootzone.
Hydrology Researcher
I worked on the development, improvement, and evaluation of several real-time soil water and salinity monitoring sensors. I also participated in several multi-disciplinary water and salinity management projects that involved researchers from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO). Furthermore, I led a project to develop and test a new template for best management practices for winery effluent disposal.
