Originally I created a socialization martial arts and fitness program called So SMArT Kids, Inc. because I was looking for a program for my son Zachary, who is on the Autism Spectrum. I wanted a safe and welcoming place where he can be himself and release all of his excess energy that made it hard for him to stop moving.Realizing that family fitness, wealth and nutrition education was needed desperately in the Autism community, we co-founded Smart Fit Fam. A 501 c (3) non-profit organization providing education, services and initiatives towards improving wellness, fitness and nutrition for families with children with Autism in 2013.We have provided workshops on safety, communication, preparing healthy meals, parent self care, family autism walks and our annual Family fitness and yoga days.Autism affects families, not just the child or individual. So SMArT Kids, us a unique fitness and social program for children with Autism and other related special needs.As a black belt in the martial arts system of Vee Arnis Jitsu, I knew the importance of values and lessons learned through being in a structured system. I wanted Zachary, my son with Autism to be part of this system too. Unfortunately I also knew he wouldn't have been able to focus and thrive in the kids classes at the dojo facility. The classes had a minimal of 40 kids on the mat at one time. This, would have been too overwhelming for him. I looked and searched for programs that he can learn martial arts, have fun and develop social skills, which at that time was one of his biggest challenges. Since I couldn't find a program, I decided to create one. Together with my co-founder we created Socialization Martial ARts Therapy Program, ( So SMArT Kids). As a parent of a child with exceptional needs, finding a program that includes fitness and social skills and results in focus, improved attention and increased social interactions this program is ideal. Class sizes are small, shorter than an hour , and includes yoga, breathing exercises and circle group talk time.
